What is England’s best lineup? My take on it

Goalkeeper- Joe Hart- Hart’s had his fair share of downs in recent times but there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s still clearly England’s number 1. It would be a huge gamble to try Fraser Forster, untried in Europe’s top leagues and the likes of John Ruddy are clearly not in Hart’s class.
Right Back- Glen Johnson- This is a very close run thing between him and Kyle Walker and I think Johnson’s better defensive attributes just pip it for me. It used to be that Johnson wasn’t noted for his defensive ability but he was without a doubt improved on that and Walker still has work to do on his defending before he can be a regular for England.
Centre Back- Gary Cahill- Cahill is without a doubt England’s best player in this position. He’s gone from strength to strength since joining Chelsea and despite lack the quality of his predecessors John Terry and Rio Ferdinand he is a very good defender.
Centre Back- Phil Jagielka- for me it’s between Jagielka and Dawson for this position and I see very little in this battle. Both are whole-hearted players who are solid options to have in the squad. Having said that, there is a clear gap to the centre back options of yesteryear when the likes of Ledley King and Jamie Carragher were waiting in reserve.
Left back- Leighton Baines- It astounds me that Baines isn’t the first choice left back over an ageing Ashley Cole. I’d argue that Baines is one of the best players in the Premier league and that isn’t just in the left back position. He attacks well, he defends well and his delivery and shooting from set pieces is up there with the very best.
Centre midfield-  Steven Gerrard- Gerrard is still a fantastic player even if he isn’t as good as he used to be. He still stands out as one of the stars of this England team when I see them play and the skipper is crucial to the qualification hopes.
Centre Midfield- Michael Carrick- It’s ridiculous that he hasn’t got 60 or 70 caps for England, the way he can dictate a game is unrivalled by other English players available to Roy Hodgson and he also offers a calming influence in the middle of the park.
Centre Midfield- Jack Wilshere- England’s one big hope for the future which as I have said in a previous post, looks bleak. This guy has the ability to become one of the best in his position in world football if he stays injury free.
Right Winger- Theo Walcott- Walcott often doesn’t perform for England as he does for Arsenal which is a big disappointment but there’s no doubting the fact that he’s the best winger in the England squad.
Striker- Daniel Sturridge- The form the Liverpool striker is on at the moment is lethal and he’s always had the potential to be a quality player but was often selfish. I think regular football in his favourite position has been the key reason for Sturridge’s rise.
Left Winger- Wayne Rooney- perhaps the most controversial of my selections as whilst a place in the side should be there for Rooney we should not base the team around him. For me, Rooney is not good as a lone striker and its rare in international football for 2 out and out strikes to be selected. I think he can perform on the wing having seen him do it for his club and with this front 3 England have genuine threat going forward.

Do English managers play more English players than foreigners?

There is theory in English football that English managers will play more English players as they understand how important the national team is. There is indictment every time an English manager such as Nigel Adkins is replaced by a foreign manager such as Mauricio Potchettino. As the example above shows, the indictment is not always correct. With Potchettino using a lot of young English players, I examine whether the typical English belief has any weight based on players used in the premier league so far this season. In total there have been 369 players used in the premier league season of which 260 have been foreign players compared to 109 English players. In total around 30% of players used this season have been English.

Arsenal- Foreign manager- 15 foreign players- 5 English players- 25% English

Aston Villa- foreign manager- 12 foreign players- 5 English players- 29% English

Cardiff City- Foreign manager- 10 foreign players- 9 English players- 47% English

Chelsea- Foreign manager- 16 foreign players- 4 English players- 20% English

Crystal Palace- English Manager- 13 foreign players- 5 English players- 28% English

Everton- foreign Manager- 10 foreign players- 6 English players- 38% English

Fulham- Foreign Manager- 16 foreign players- 6 English players- 27% English

Hull City- English Manager- 10 foreign players- 6 English players- 38% English

Liverpool- foreign Manager- 13 foreign players- 5 English players- 28% English

Manchester City- Foreign Manager- 15 foreign players- 4 English players- 21% English

Manchester United- Foreign Manager- 12 foreign players- 6 English players- 33% English

Newcastle United- English Manager- 17 foreign players- 2 English players- 11% English

Norwich City- English Manager- 12 foreign players- 6 English players- 33% English

Southampton- Foreign manager- 9 foreign players- 8 English players- 47% English

Stoke City- foreign manager- 13 foreign players- 5 English players- 28% English

Sunderland- foreign manager- 16 foreign players- 4 English players- 20% English

Swansea- foreign manager- 13 foreign players- 3 English players- 19% English

Tottenham- foreign manager- 13 foreign players- 6 English players- 32% English

West Brom- foreign manager- 14 foreign players- 6 English players- 30% English

West Ham- English manager- 11 foreign players- 8 English players- 42% English

279 players have been used by foreign managers this season with 197 being foreign compared to 82 being English leaving a percentage of 29% of players being English.

90 players have been used by English managers this season with 63 players being foreign and 27 being English leaving 30% of the players that have been used English.

The statistics above therefore show, albeit on a small sample of English managers in the premier league that it is a myth that English players are given more opportunities by English managers. This is further shown by Alan Pardew fielding the least amount of English players and he himself being an English manager. The two managers that have fielded the most English players this season are both foreign albeit Mackay is Scottish.

reasons for the lack of top English players in recent years

I saw an article during the week that Nathaniel Chalobah is now on £35,000 a week. Whether the statistic is correct or not it is clear that youngsters are given wages that are too high with Chalobah yet to make a big impact on a premier league first team. I saw Chalobah play last season a number of times and it is clear that the boy has big talent but that is all it is at the moment. Put yourself in Chalobah’s shoes, I don’t know what wages he was on before he signed his new contract but I’d be shocked if it was above £3,500 a week which of course is a still a large wage by society’s standards. The point I’m trying to make is that Chalobah was probably quite comfortable living on his previous wage, and it being increased by around 10 times would be difficult for anyone to comprehend and it certainly makes it difficult for players to stay grounded. If you were living comfortably off a wage and it got increased by 10 times, you’d probably want to spend the increase in wages and lead a more lavish lifestyle, it’s human nature. Young footballers don’t have a clue what to do with £35,000 a week and that is the key reason for the unnecessary lavish lifestyle footballers lead but it’s difficult to blame them for doing so. The wage could make Chalobah think that he’s made it and ironically that could lead him further away from making it as an England star. Chalobah’s case is common amongst the big clubs of England. There is evidence of this in the case of Nile Ranger, whilst I’m not saying that Ranger had the ability or potential of Chalobah it is shown that his problems at Newcastle started with a big money new contract. Whilst he’d had problems at other clubs, his problems had died down upon joining Newcastle before his 5 year contract. Similarly, I see the same potentially happening with Raheem Sterling who has already been involved in off- the pitch problems since his new contract. Clearly, I’m not saying that every youngster who gets a big new contract causes trouble off the pitch, but it is a very big ask for youngsters to ignore their new found riches and to live the same life as they did before. I saw an article in the Newcastle Journal about Newcastle blaming youngster James Tavernier for celebrating his new contract with a new car, but I wouldn't say that is an unexpected reaction to having a new contract. It’s difficult to blame anyone for their role in these affairs. For example, if Chelsea hadn’t offered Chalobah a huge wage increase, it’s possible he could have gone elsewhere with Arsenal showing an interest, this doesn’t shock me as Chalobah has huge potential and I think he could make it at the top level given the chance, Chelsea need to make sure to protect their investment I understand that. Clearly Chalobah is not going to ask for less money as that is not how most people work. The solution I think that could be used is some sort of universal wage cap on players, that until they have played over a certain amount of professional games, say 100 they should not be allowed such money, and then move the pay scheme up gradually not by giving players huge wage rises.

Secondly the length of the contract causes problems. Again taking Chalobah’s example as an 18 year old, he has a 5 year contract. If Chalobah becomes a first team regular at Chelsea within a couple of seasons this will not be an issue. However, if it so happens that in two years time, Chalobah has still not got a path to the first team, then it becomes complex and let’s face it, that is quite possible as Chelsea do not have the best record for bringing through young players. In an ideal situation, Chalobah would leave to another premier league club, and at 20 would still have time to make it as a star.  However, with a 5 year contract, Chelsea would demand a big fee for him and the wages will mean that it would be costly for a potential bidder and it is likely to put off other premier league clubs. Therefore, it is possible that a cluster of loan spells will be all a youngster has to show by the time he is 22 or 23 when he would eventually leave the club. Whilst I’ve seen fans argue that the best youngsters will rise to the top , many of the youngsters that were so talked about have barely progressed at all. Josh McEachran is one such example. Whilst he is only 20, he was talked about as Chelsea’s star of the future only a couple of years ago but he hasn’t stepped up at all. He hasn’t impressed in loan spells and is probably as far away from the Chelsea first team as ever and he probably needs a move to fulfil his undoubted potential and it’s not too late for him. But guess what, he has given a 5 year contract meaning he has another 3 years left on his contract, another 2 or 3 years without first team football would mean it will be too late for him to become a world class player as he was once hyped to be. Team’s would have to pay a decent sum to sign him and his wages may be quite expensive. People argue Chalobah is the best thing to come through the Chelsea academy in years, but they argued the same about McEachran only 2 years ago.

On the flip side of this, Ross Barkley may finally be given a chance to fulfil his potential at Everton which is really pleasing to see, I felt that it may be time for him to move on after a couple of unsuccessful loan spells but due to Martinez’s faith I can see him thriving and this shows that sometimes youngsters just need a run of games and a manager that believes in them. Andy Carroll is a good example, he was almost sold by Newcastle for £1million but upon relegation Newcastle were forced to rely on him. In the first half of the championship season he was average at best. The second half of the season saw him take off and the rest is history. A number of years ago Glen Johnson was sold by Chelsea at a young and Portsmouth took the chance and he has become one of the best right backs in England. For that to happen now, it takes a huge gamble due to the length of contracts and high wages being offered to young players. It means a high net cost for clubs. Liverpool had to pay £12million to sign Daniel Sturridge and must people at the time thought it was a waste of money, its turned out to be a very good signing but how many managers would have taken that chance? The funny thing is that Sturridge would probably be Chelsea’s top striker now, but they didn’t give him a run of first team games in his best position and it meant that Sturridge’s career had to be saved by Liverpool.

Does Deadline day lead to panic signings? analysis of the 2012 summer window

Does Deadline day lead to panic signings?

There are several arguments that deadline day leads to panic signings as shown by the failed transfers of Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres for inflated fees. Having said that there is a lot of evidence of smart business being done on such a hectic day with Christian Benteke and Hugo Lloris both being signed at excellent value last season. This shows the varying statistics of success between deadline day signings and signings before the last day of the window.

There weren’t as many deadline day signings as usual last year, so maybe the stats are slightly unreliable, nonetheless, there seems to be a trend that the better signings are made before deadline day and a number of deadline day signings can be seen as evidence of panic buying, namely the Scott Sinclair transfer to Manchester City followed by Roberto Mancini using him sparingly.

The Top 10 Most Overrated Players In The Premier League

Most overrated players in the premier league

Kieran Gibbs

Why Arsenal preserve with him I am not sure. He is a way off the ability of Monreal in the times I’ve seen the Spanish defender play, his defending often leaves a lot to be desired and added to this he has frequent injury troubles yet whenever he returns from his injuries Arsene Wenger seems to throw him straight back into the starting 11.

Alan Hutton

Paul Lambert finally seems to have recognised his many weaknesses. Defensively he is slow, attackingly he shows little quality and I fail to see why someone ever invested £8million in him as he displays very little talent in any capacity and also has a dubious injury record.

Frank Lampard

Probably the most controversial of my selections, and whilst Lampard has been a great player over the years, last year I feel he declined and is no longer the player he once was. Yes he scored lots of goals, but last season he found himself out of position frequently and Chelsea conceded several extra goals because of this, he no longer has the energy to play in front of the Chelsea defence and often leaves them exposed.

Darron Gibson

Gibson has never really shown a lot of quality for me. Despite this he continues to start most weeks for a very strong Everton side. His long shot ability is shouted about due to the occasional screamer but he also wastes possession having long shots so frequently. His tackling is sub-standard and his passing is not exceptional so I question what he brings to a premier league side.

Adel Taarabt

There’s no doubt that Taarabt possesses a tremendous amount of quality and is difficult to play against when he’s on form. However, those days don’t come about too often and when he’s off form it can be like playing with 10 men when he doesn’t do any defending. His sulking and temperament issues can rub off on the team and make them play worse and lower morale and his performances do not compensate for the poor attitude that he has.

Gareth Barry

With all the riches available to Manchester City, you would think they would have a top class defensive midfielder. Instead they have Barry. Don’t get me wrong Barry is a decent midfield player as he showed at Aston Villa, but he doesn’t affect the game anywhere near enough to be good enough for one of the best teams in England.

Alexander Kolarov

Kolarov in an attacking sense is useful, his freekicks are impressive and is bombing down the left is a threat to defenders. His actual defending however, is awful and the primary function of fullback is to defend. Why Man City paid £16million for him is beyond me, he is a defensive liability and costs his team far more goals than he contributes to in an attacking sense.

Phil Jones

Perhaps a controversial one, but after all the hype about Jones being England’s next big thing, the new Rio Ferdinand I feel it is justified. Jones lacks the physical presence to be a commanding centre half in my opinion and he struggles against big strikers. He does not have the attributes to play central midfield at the highest level, whilst his positional sense is questionable at right back. There’s no doubt that Jones is a decent player but to expect him to be England’s next big player is too far for a player who is far from first choice with his club.

Steven Taylor

There’s more to a good defender than diving in front of the ball and putting your body on the line. Taylor is a very committed defender and every now and again he has one of those games where everyone questions why he isn’t in the England squad, the game at home to Anzhi last year being the prime example. His positional sense and his concentration are severely lacking and no amount of passion can make up for his poor decision making, yet he is often excused by Newcastle fans simply for being a Geordie. Taylor is simply another run of the mill average premier league defender, not the new John Terry as he was previously proclaimed.

Glenn Whelan

Why this championship standard midfielder continues to be a regular in the Stoke side I do not know. I expect Mark Hughes to move him on sharpish. For all his endeavour Whelan possess very little talent, he’s not a great tackler and he’s not the most creative of midfielders.

Newcastle versus West Ham player ratings

Newcastle United versus West Ham ratings

Newcastle United

Krul 6- little to do for the Dutch international, with only one shot on target at his goal
Debuchy- 6- A much improved performance from the Frenchman compared to Monday night, Jarvis did still cause him problems on a couple of occasions though.
Yanga-Mbiwa- 7- looked much more comfortable in his preferred position of centre-back compared to his shaky performance at left back on Monday night. Definitely Newcastle’s 2nd best centre-back in my opinion.
Coloccini- 7- typically assured performance from the Newcastle captain, the Argentinian is so important to Newcastle United and is their most consistent and best performer.
Santon- 7- solid enough defensively although Downing was able to get a few crosses in, Newcastle’s biggest threat going forward, he cut inside effectively and gave the West Ham defenders a difficult afternoon.
Ben Arfa- 4- An afternoon to forget for the Frenchman. He was wasteful in possession with a number of shots being fired off target, the West Ham defenders dealt with him well and he was visually frustrated with his own performance.
Sissoko- 7- a powerful performance and he definitely looks a better player in a deeper midfield position to the one where Alan Pardew tends to deploy him. Him and Anita looked a good central midfield combo.
Anita- 8- The man of the match for me, he was comfortable in possession and was the start of all of Newcastle’s attacking moves. Should have a regular place in the Magpies side in my opinion.
Marveaux- 6- a quiet afternoon for the winger but when he was involved he looked like he might create, needs to be brought into the game more often.
Shola Ameobi- 5- the Nigerian striker tried hard but had little effect on the game. He won a few free kicks and held the ball up well but he didn’t ever look like he was going to get a goal and there was little to worry the 2 centre backs.
Cisse- 4- he didn’t get involved in the game at all and never looked like getting a goal. Last season I constantly told people I wasn’t worried about his form because he was getting chances and it was only a matter of time before he started putting them away. Now I am worried as he isn’t getting into positions to shoot anymore, he was static and easy to defend against.

Subs
Sammy Ameobi-7- was lively when he came on and increased the tempo of Newcastle’s play as he attacked his fullback. Nearly managed to grab a goal for himself but the effort that cannoned back of the upright was an attempt at a cross.
Gouffran-5- like Sammy, he added pace to the Newcastle attacks and was the only one of the 3 strikers to offer movement. However, his late miss was embarrassing and he should have given Newcastle 3 points.

West Ham

Jaaskelainen-6- The veteran Finnish goalkeeper had little to do as Newcastle failed to muster a shot on target.
Demel-6- was solid for most of the game although Santon did cause a few problems, offered little in an attacking sense however.
Collins-8-didn’t give Ameobi and Cisse a kick, the lack of Newcastle chances has to be down to how the two centre-backs managed to restrict the magpie strikers.
Reid-8- as with Collins a terrific performance, had a half chance to score at the other end and the New Zealand international added to his fledging reputation with a brilliant defensive display.
O’Brien- 7- Dealt excellently with the threat of Ben Arfa and if you keep Ben Arfa quiet against this Newcastle side you go some way to keeping Newcastle quiet.
Diame-7- another powerful display from the box-to-box midfielder, the battle between him and Moussa Sissoko was intriguing and it more or less evened itself out through the course of the match.
Noble-6- hard working off the ball in midfield but did not affect the game in possession as much as he’d have liked to.
Nolan-6- a typically combative performance from the former Newcastle captain. However, he will have been disappointed to have wasted a free header with most in the ground expecting the Hammers captain to score as he has so often in similar situations.
Downing- 7- a couple of dangerous crosses from the England international on his full debut, I was surprised to see him substituted although his replacement also caused trouble on the flanks. He maybe should have done better with a header but his aerial ability isn’t a strength of his game.
Jarvis-7- caused trouble on the wing for the Newcastle back four when he cut in on his right foot, he managed to get  passed Debuchy a few times.
Maiga- 5- the striker who almost joined Newcastle in January 2012 was ineffectual for most of the 90 minutes although he had a late effort correctly chalked off for offside.

Subs
Cole- 6- caused a few problems when he came on, nearly grabbed a goal but his shot went agonisingly wide of the post.

Morrison- 5- made little impact during his brief cameo off the bench.

Aston Villa versus Liverpool match preview

Aston Villa versus Liverpool

Weimann                                                                                                            Aspas

I think this could be a very entertaining and interesting game to watch. Both sides attempt to play attacking football at pace and this match really could go either way. I don’t expect many changes to either side as both teams started the season well last week and by all accounts Villa were unlucky to not get anything in midweek. Liverpool will want to increase their ruthlessness however, as if it hadn’t been for Simon Mignolet’s penalty save they may have thrown two points away in a game they dominated and had chances to win comfortably.

Stoke showed signs of attempting to play more attacking football at Anfield and although Liverpool
Had their fair share of chances to win the game handsomely, Stoke nearly nicked a point late on. I expect both teams to be in the relegation battle come the end of the season so it could be an important game for both sides. I expect Stoke to come out on top however.

Differing fortunes for these two last week as Southampton came away with an impressive 1-0 victory at the Hawthorns and the clean sheet will particularly please Mauricio Pochettino whose side played some very impressive attacking football last season but the defending was often shaky. I can see them recording a win at St Marys against a much-changed Sunderland side. Sunderland played well against Fulham but could not find a goal and I expect Di Canio to play a similar side this week although second guessing Di Canio is a dangerous game!

I expect West Ham to remain unchanged with no new fitness worries and former Geordie hero Andy Carroll still on the sidelines. West Ham’s away form was poor last season and they will want to improve on that this time around although they did win at St James’ Park last year with ex- Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan getting the winner. This match is huge for Alan Pardew, anything other than a win for his magpies side will put him under enormous pressure and I think a loss could see him out of a job come Monday morning. I think this one could be a bore draw.

Hull were always going to struggle with their first fixture back in the big time and this game represents their first real chance at picking up some points. Norwich look a strong side and this is shown by them having a good lineup on paper despite missing some key players in their team. Norwich have real competition for places now particularly in wide areas although several wingers are out for them for this clash. A solid result against Everton last time out I think they may spoil the party at the KC Stadium but I think it will be a close encounter.
